To process transactions with open-loop providers, the system can use both a conventional PAN (the number found on your card) or a network token. Network tokens are a replacement for the actual card data that unlike proprietary PSP tokens are issued by the schemes and interchangeable between different open-loop providers. Network tokens are linked to a concrete merchant and buyer combination. This reduces PCI scope for you while at the same time providing an authorization uplift on the issuer side because of increased issuer trust in the underlying funding source. As a merchant, to start using network tokens, contact the support team to be set up. As part of the setup, any existing Requestor ID can be accepted or if you’re not already enrolled in the schemes, a new one can be set up as part of onboarding.
